Whaling Museum issued the following announcement.

The Nantucket Historical Association (NHA) is excited to welcome the community for the 2nd Annual “We All Speak Moby-Dick”: A Multilingual Reading Event to celebrate the diversity of the island through literature. To enhance the program in its second year, the NHA has tasked its team of eight Nantucket High School interns to assist with the planning and promotion of the program on March 21.

The program will feature readings of select chapters of Moby-Dick in multiple languages, including Spanish, Russian, Portuguese, Bulgarian, English, and Italian. Participants will be assigned sections in a language of their choosing and read for 5-10 minutes.

“We All Speak Moby-Dick is not only a title for the multilingual reading, but it calls out to all that we have in common. It is a language that all can speak,” says Mary Lacoursiere, the Peter M. & Bonnie J. Sacerdote Chair of Education and Community Relations. “This is the second year, and we are thrilled to have our high school interns lead the charge and produce this community event. This winter we have been working with the students in areas of finance, public speaking, promotion, and team building, and this event will put all those elements into practical use.  This is an opportunity to unify the many voices and cultures on the island and celebrate all that we have in common, while honoring where we have all come from, all underpinned by this classical piece of literature.”

The program also offers a kid-friendly reading, as well as Moby-Dick, themed crafts in the Discovery Room, along with cultural dance performances and international snacks.

“We All Speak Moby-Dick”: A Multilingual Reading Event will be held on Saturday, March 21, 2020, 4–7 p.m., at the Whaling Museum. The program will be FREE to all community members.
