Statement on the Death of Tyre Nichols by President Michelle Schutt

I am appalled by the tragic death of Tyre Nichols at the hands of Memphis police. As a community college that puts family and people first, I recognize that these reprehensible events impact not just our students, faculty, and staff, but everyone around us.

We offer support to everyone in our community who may need it and stand in solidarity with those who are trying to improve this world to prevent these tragedies.

If you are an employee of GCC, the Employee Assistance Program (EAP) through the Commonwealth provides a number of resources and support, including a 24-hour support line at (844) 263-1982. You can learn more about the resources included in the EAP at liveandworkwell.com.

For GCC students, we have full digital and virtual mental health services, and staff are willing to talk with you. Our services can be found at gcccares4u.com, or you can call our 24-hour support line at (833) 434-1217.

I also maintain an open door to discuss this or anything else, if you feel the need to and are comfortable. Please feel free to come to my office or email me at president@gcc.mass.edu.

Now is the time to fall back on the words I left you with at the end of the College Welcome last fall: “Be kind to each other, be kind to our students, be kind to yourselves.”
